This Module Lesson is divided into 4 sections:
All of the material and activities you will need to complete this module are listed or linked below. Please contact me if you have any questions. Have fun! :) |
Solving Linear Equations
When solving an equation, your goal is to find what # you can plug in for x to make a true statement.
For the HSA, you will need to know how to solve problems like this:
For the HSA, you will need to know how to solve problems like this:
- x + 5 = -8
- -4x = 20
- 2x - 9 = 21
- 3x + 10 = 5x - 24
- If you know how to do these, go ahead and try them, and check your answers here!
- If you DO NOT know how do these, please watch the two videos below to help you learn. After the videos, try the questions and see how you do. Worked out solutions.

For more practice, try some problems with the Rags to Riches game. If you want to challenge your friends, family, or just yourself, you can play a Solving Equation Jeopardy Game. Practice makes perfect! :) Remember, math CAN be fun!
Once you have solving equations down, let's explore the coordinate plane.....
Once you have solving equations down, let's explore the coordinate plane.....
The Coordinate Plane
The coordinate plane is a very important concept in Algebra 1. You will need to understand how to plot ordered pairs on the HSA. Please watch the video to the right to refresh and enhance your understanding of the Coordinate Plane.
Time to Practice: It is your turn to see if you can accurately plot points on a coordinate plane. Play the "Catch the Fly" Game until you have this concept mastered! Then, it will be time to talk about SLOPE..... :)
Note: I realize Flash games may not work on all computers. Here is another web-based game to try if the fly game doesn't work properly.

Finding the Slope
Slope is one of the most fundamental concepts in Algebra 1. It is all about how the problem (line) is changing. Is it increasing? decreasing? At what rate? Watch the video below to review how to find the slope of a line graphed on the coordinate plane.
Then, you get to play my FAVORITE slope games, Algebra vs Cockroaches. It also helps you practice graphing lines in the infamous SLOPE-INTERCEPT form.
Slope-Intercept Form... (In case you forgot)
- The "m" is our slope and it tells us how the line "moves"
- The "b" is our y-intercept and it tell you where you "begin" on the y-axis

Self- Quiz & Review
Download and Print the Review Assignment. Complete this by hand. You have two choices for submitting this assignment:
- Bring it to my classroom. Then, type "Dropped it off to Classroom" in the dropbox for this assignment.
- Scan it in. Save it as a PDF. Upload it to the dropbox for this assignment in the Canvas Course.
Have you mastered all the material in this module?
If so, it is time to test your knowledge and reflect on your learning!
If not, please continue to practice the lesson and complete the the self-quiz and review activities. If you are having problems understanding, please contact me NOW so I can help! Remember, to move on the next Module, you will need to pass the Exam with at least an 80%. If you have difficulty doing this, I will provide some additional remediation supports.
